An old
Western Saddle and a Buggy with trappings from the turn of the
last century welcome visitors to the Transportation of the West Museum . The buggy is estimated to be 100 years old, judging by the square nails used in its construction. It was purchased in Canada and brought to Monte Vista, where Gordon and Roena Rowe acquired it. For several years it was shown with the original finish, then later restored to its present condition. With Roena driving and Gordon greeting the public, the buggy participated in many parades throughout the Valley. The Rowes dressed according to parade themes -- one highlight was Roena in a scanty costume as a "Lady of the Night" with Gordon doubling as "Diamond Jim Brady". "Zeke", the faithful Arabian horse who pulled the buggy, died in 1998 at the age of 30 years. This buggy, Zeke, and the Rowes appeared in newspapers throughout the state and were awarded many prizes during their show days. |
