Morada

No predominantly
Hispanic Community is complete in Southern Colorado or Northern New
Mexico, unless present somewhere in the background is a seemingly
deserted building that is, nonetheless, well cared for, but not
overly so.
The structure is adobe, with a double-pitched
roof, which is usually covered with adequate quality roll paper
roofing. The windows, if not shuttered, are carefully painted or
heavily curtained.
The vintage of the building is late 1800s
or early 1900s, with thick adobe walls.
This is a
morada. This is a chapel of the Penitente or the ancient
Hermandad, a religious-fraternal brotherhood in Hispanic
society.
Here in our replica of such a worship place, you
will find Hispanic religious items such as santos,
retablos, which are painting on wood or other media, carved
religious figures, called bultos,
and various other religious artifacts. |
